Staff: Mrs Ahmer, Mrs Metcalfe and Mrs Purvis

Welcome to Class 4A!

We have 30 talented and energetic superstars in our class! Our teacher is Mrs Ahmer and we are supported in our learning by Mrs Metcalfe and Mrs Purvis. We hope you find the information on this page useful.

This year we will be exploring three amazing topics, which we are very excited about. In Autumn, we will be looking at how Britain has changed since 1837. We will identify changes throughout history, compare these changes to our lives today and discuss the laws and rulings which have contributed to improving our lives today.

We will also learn about some local history and take a look at how Thornhill used to look and historical events which occurred a long time ago. In our English lessons, we will focus on some Victorian themed books; Fair’s Fair-by Leon Garfield and Oliver Twist- by Charles Dickens. We will also explore this topic further through our curriculum lessons.

In Spring, we will look at the question ‘What is life like on the roof of the world?’ This is linked to our topic book: Running on the roof of the world by Jess Butterworth. We will did deep into the history and links between China and Tibet.

Finally, in the Summer term we will be researching and looking into what Howard Carter discovered. Through this topic, we will explore the lives of the ancient Egyptians and take a look at how life used to be and find out about the weird and wonderful rituals and practices they had.

These are just a few of the many learning opportunities planned for Y4 this year. We have lots more exciting activities and events planned across the school year to enhance these exciting topics, so please keep an eye on newsletters and social media for dates and times!

Lessons will take place on a Tuesday afternoon. We have been extremely lucky to have an extra PE session with a rugby coach from the Huddersfield Giants. These will take place on Wednesday afternoons for the first six weeks of Autumn term only. We are also very excited about going swimming at the Dewsbury Sports Centre, every Monday afternoon. Please remember to bring kits on these days.

We have singing with Mr. Simons on a Wednesday afternoon and we are also learning to play the ukulele in Music lessons on a Friday morning.

We have PSHCE with Mr Beaumont on a Tuesday afternoon.

Homework will be given out on a Friday and needs to be returned to school by the following Wednesday. Children can change their reading books daily.

How to help your child
Please ensure that your child brings their reading diaries into school every day and reads at least three times a week at home. It is also important that children complete their homework on time and support should be given to children as necessary. By the end of Y4, it is expected that children will know all of their times tables so regular practice of these would also be beneficial. Reading books and researching the topics we will be covering would also be really useful.

We have an open door policy so if you ever need to speak to one of the teachers, please call in before or after school, telephone or go to the office to make an appointment.

We look forward to working with your children this and sharing our learning with you!
