Every year, your child will have dedicated sessions covering these areas delivered by Mr Beaumont, who has recently become a PSHE Association Chartered Teacher. The PSHE Association is the leading national organisation for this area of the curriculum. This gives real quality assurance to the content and delivery of PSHCE Ed at Thornhill J and I.

An important feature of PSHCE Ed at Thornhill J and I is the spiral nature of the curriculum, whereby children revisit key areas in increasing depth as they move through school. This is helped enormously by having a dedicated PSHCE Ed teacher who is able to really get to know your children and their needs as they grow and develop.


Year 1 will be learning about how to keep themselves safe at school and home, when and how to ask for help and who to go to when they need support. They will practice resisting pressure to take risks as well as learning about road and water safety. We use the acclaimed NSPCC “pants” resource and practise making calls to childline and the emergency services. Following this unit we look at rights and responsibilities from a very young person’s point of view.


Year 2 focusses on mental health as well as recapping the key messages of personal safety from the previous year. As you may already be aware, mental health is a growing national concern for our young people so it is vital we equip our children with the tools needed to recognise and manage their emotions and feelings. As well as learning about the range of big and small emotions associated with getting on and falling out they practise supporting friends to go to the right person for support. Year 2 is also where we introduce the naming of parts of the body, including the sexual parts. This is in line with government guidelines for effective safeguarding of children.


In year 3, children learn about friendship on and off line. After outlining the positive qualities we expect from our friends, we look at how to manage fall outs, the need to develop respectful relationships and how to be assertive. Online friendship is increasingly a part of our children’s lives and we help our school puppet, Jeremy, make some sensible choices. Finally, children learn that one of the best ways of making friends is by cultivating the capacity to listen.

Road safety is revisited and how decision making can be influenced by peer pressure.

. Year 4 continues the theme of risk awareness, which is particularly important as our children become increasingly independent. Road, water and rail safety are studied in greater depth. Also in Year 4, children learn about making  healthy lifestyle choices when faced with heavily advertised processed food. This unit also also looks at alcohol. They learn that this legal drug can be used responsibly by adults but also how and why it is often misused. Mental health is revisited, developing understanding of more complex emotions. Finally, in Year 4 we celebrate children’s unique qualities and how they fit into our diverse school and community. Children learn through role play ways to challenge stereotyping and become effective citizens, safely standing up for the rights of others to be treated equally


Year 5 study human rights through the stories of people who have fought for them. They also experience first hand what it is like to be prejudiced against for a characteristic they have no control over. Their role playing in Year 4 is built on to develop their capacity to report injustice wherever they find it and make their voices heard through the democratic process. Year 5 is where children learn about the changes that happen during puberty. They also learn about the effects and risks of smoking in the context of legal drug use. They consider that legal does definitely not mean safe. Many people find respectful communication through social media to be a challenge and parents are often concerned about their child’s phone use. The myfirstmobile programme, developed in Kirklees has been specially adapted to encourage our children to self regulate their phone use and avoid common pitfalls for young people.


In Year 6, personal finance is covered and, through a young person’s journey into debt, children learn about interest rates and the need to be very careful when entering into a loan agreement or misleading monthly payment deals. The effects and risks of cannabis are dealt with as we reconsider legal and illegal drugs and the pressure that young people can come under to try them as they move through their teenage years. In year 6 children engage in important discussions around Relationships and Sexual Health. They learn about human reproduction, but the main focus is on drawing upon their cumulative understanding of what respectful and healthy relationships should be like. We then go on to consider how sexualised the media can be and the potential impact this can have on how young people perceive themselves. The Dove campaign resources are used to encourage our young people to be responsible when they post on social media and be aware of how advertising can their affect body image.
PSHCE Education involves learning about some of the most important life choices your child will make. Our programme is carefully designed to give children the knowledge they need to make informed decisions and encourage their capacity for critical independent thinking.

There is a strong role play element to your child’s PSHCE Ed which is aimed at developing and internalising their learning, rather than just writing down what they might do in particular situations. Pictures and videos made as part of this are stored securely on the school’s server. We keep a record of children’s experiences and feedback in Floorbooks (Years 123) and in Records of Achievement (Years 456).
